Do you pretend to learn English? Or do you intend to learn English?

Check out the video below to learn the differences between these two confusing verbs!

Let’s review.

Pretend = to act as if something is true when it is not. (fingir)

Examples:

  1. Chris is pretending to be sick. He doesn’t want to go to school today. (O Chris está fingindo estar doente. Ele não quer ir para a escola hoje.)
  2. The children like to pretend that they are super heroes. They put on costumes and chase each other around. (As crianças gostam de fingir que são super-heróis. Eles se vestem com fantasias e correm um atrás do outro.)

Intend = to plan or want to do something  (pretender)

Examples:

  1. We intend to get married next year. (A gente pretende se casar no ano que vem.)
  2. I intend to study medicine at college.  (Pretendo estudar medicina na faculdade.)

So tell me…

Do you pretend to study English or do you really study English?  😉

What do you intend to do in the next few years?
