It’s Phrasal Verb Friday! Today’s phrasal verb is DEAL WITH.

DEAL WITH has 3 different meanings.

# 1. To handle (a situation, a problem, a person, a challenge, etc.); to take action in order to achieve something or in order to solve a problem (lidar com uma situação, um problema, uma pessoa, um desafio, etc.)

# 2. To be about or be on the subject of something (tratar de; ter o assunto)

# 3. To work with; to buy goods or services from someone, or to sell them to someone (lidar com/trabalhar com uma empressa ou uma pessoa com vendas, negociações, ou serviços)

Here are some examples for meaning #1

1. How do you plan on dealing with this problem? (Como você pretende lidar com esse problema?)

2. My secretary deals with all schedule-related questions and the payments. (Minha secretária lida com todas as questões relacionadas com o agendamento e os pagamentos.)

3. I can’t deal with the kids right now. They’ve been fighting all day and I’m losing my patience. (Eu não consigo lidar com essas crianças agora. Eles estão brigando o dia inteiro e eu estou perdendo a paciência.)

4. My boss deals with a lot of problems, but he never seems to be too stressed out. (Meu chefe lida com muitos problemas, mas ele nunca parece estar muito estressado.)

Here are some examples for meaning #2

1.This movie deals with the relationship between a sick woman and her daughter. (Este filme se trata da relação entre uma mulher doente e sua filha.)

2. Viktor Frankl’s book “A Man’s Search for Meaning” deals with his experiences while living in a concentration camp during WWII. (O livro “Homem em Busca de Sentido” de Viktor Frankl se trata de suas experiências morando num campo de concentração durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.)

3.The paper that I’m writing deals with the issue of present day poverty in America. (O texto que eu estou escrevendo se trata da questão da pobreza nos dias atuais nos Estados Unidos.)

Here are some examples for meaning #3

1.We’ve been dealing with the same company for years and they’ve always provided us great service. (Há anos que estamos trabalhando com a mesma empresa e eles sempre nos forneceu um ótimo serviço.)

2. I’ve been dealing with the bank to refinance my house. (Estou trabalhando/negociando com o banco para refinanciar minha casa).

3. I dealt with Mario during the negotiation process. (Eu trabalhei com o Mario durante o processo de negociação.)

 

BONUS EXPRESSION!

Have you ever heard someone say, “Deal with it”? It depends on the situation, but it usually means “Accept the situation” or “Figure it out.”

Side note: “Deal with it” is very informal and is often used with sarcasm or as a joke.

“DEAL WITH IT” – Se vire; lide com isso; ou aceite a situação

For example, a teenager may say jokingly to his friends, “I’m way better than you at basketball. So deal with it.” (Sou bem melhor do que você no basquet, então toma essa. kkk)
