Tip #1 The “i” in English sounds like the “ê” sound in Portuguese. Or /I/ if you’re familiar with the international phonetic alphabet (IPA).

Tip #2 Words that end in –ie, -y, or –ee have the E sound or /i:/ in the IPA.
Frisbee, emergency, silly, Policy, Guarantee, Friendly, Minnie and Mickey
Note: If the word doesn’t end in –y, -ie, or –ee. There is NO “E” sound at the end of the word.
Food, Horse, Lake, Test, Office, police
Tip #3 CH sounds like Tch in Portuguese. Think of “Tchau” to help you remember. It’s /tʃ/ in the IPA.
Cherry, Chores, Change, Chart, Chance, Chuckle
Tip #4 R in English is NOT “rr” in Portuguese. It is /r/ in the IPA.
