Here are 4 tips to help you improve your English pronunciation! We are also sharing some funny stories about common pronunciation mistakes in English and in Portuguese.

Don’t forget to practice!

Tip #1 The “i” in English sounds like the “ê” sound in Portuguese. Or /I/ if you’re familiar with the international phonetic alphabet (IPA).

 This kid is Jim.

Which gift is his?

Mrs. Smith is kissing Mr. Gil in Brazil.

Did Phil miss his ship to Madrid?

Tip #2 Words that end in –ie, -y, or –ee have the E sound or /i:/ in the IPA.

Frisbee, emergency, silly, Policy, Guarantee, Friendly, Minnie and Mickey

Note:  If the word doesn’t end in –y, -ie, or –ee.   There is NO “E” sound at the end of the word.

Food, Horse, Lake, Test, Office, police

Tip #3 CH sounds like Tch in Portuguese. Think of “Tchau” to help you remember. It’s  /tʃ/ in the IPA.

Cherry, Chores, Change, Chart, Chance, Chuckle

Tip #4  R in English is NOT “rr” in Portuguese. It is /r/ in the IPA.
